Convicted killer faces murder charges for homeless camp beating death

A convicted killer has been charged with murder for the beating death of another man at a homeless camp in Oakland on Tuesday.

Javier Fregoso Reyes, 55, was charged and arraigned on Thursday in connection with the death of Miguel Marin.

Reyes, who is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail, returned to court Friday to be assigned an attorney and is scheduled to come to court again on March 13 to enter a plea.

Officers were flagged down inside the homeless camp in the 2000 block of Embarcadero at about 12:11 p.m. on Tuesday by a person who said someone there needed medical attention, Oakland police Sgt. Yun Zhou wrote in a probable cause statement.

The officers found Marin suffering from major blunt force trauma injuries and he was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, Zhou said.

Marin’s death is one of a number of homicides at Oakland homeless camps in recent years.

Reyes was arrested at Highland Hospital in Oakland at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Zhou’s probable cause statement didn’t mention that Reyes suffered any injuries or explain why he was at the hospital.

Zhou wrote that Reyes admitted to being in a dispute with Marin and bludgeoning Marin to death.

In addition to murder, Reyes is charged with using a deadly weapon, namely a large rock.

Prosecutors say Reyes was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in Oakland in Alameda County in 1985.
