Police early Sunday morning arrested a 54-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after a female relative had suffered several major injuries from what officers called a “brutal assault” in American Canyon.
American Canyon paramedics were sent at about 4:45 a.m. Sunday to the 100 block of Via Pescara on the report of a “person down,” police said.
Officers had first been told the woman was injured in a fall, and she was taken by ambulance to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa. But an examination there revealed significant injuries inconsistent with a fall, so American Canyon police were notified and started an investigation.

American Canyon police officers, along with detectives from the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, found evidence that the victim had been brutally assaulted by a relative, 54-year-old Fakaofilani Akaola of San Rafael.
Napa County detectives interviewed Akaola, who was subsequently booked into Napa County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.
The victim, a female relative of Akaola, remained hospitalized Sunday night with serious injuries, police said.
