The officer-involved shooting at BART El Cerrito del Norte station was sparked by a “domestic disturbance” called in by a witness on a Warm Springs-bound train, according to a statement made during a press conference held late Saturday afternoon.
BART Police Chief Ed Alvarez said two officers who were wearing body cameras responded to the call around 2 p.m. and confronted a male who was reportedly screaming at a woman.
The suspect then ran from the train, down the platform and onto the trackway. Alvarez said the suspect then produced a handgun and the officers shot at the man. BART police say a gun was recovered from the scene.
The suspect was flown to a hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
The chief had not watched the body camera or platform surveillance videos by the time of the press conference.
El Cerrito del Norte and Richmond stations remained closed as of 5:26 p.m., according to a Twitter update issued by BART officials. AC transit buses 72 and 72M are running parallel service to Richmond and El Cerrito Plaza Station, according to BART.
