Fewer endorses Connie Chan in run for District 1 seat

After working for two supervisors as a legislative aide, San Francisco resident Connie Chan is making a run for the District 1 supervisor seat.

Chan showed up to the Department of Elections Friday and filed  necessary paperwork to establish her candidacy in the Richmond District race. She said she made the decision to run after current Supervisor Sandra Fewer announced this week she would not seek re-election.

Fewer said she was proud and honored to endorse Chan as her successor on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Fewer said:

“I know Connie will stand for rent control. She will stand up for our tenants. She will continue the work we have done on affordable housing. I am proud to support her today.”

Born in Hong Kong, Chan came with her family to San Francisco at the age of 13 and lived in Chinatown with her mother and brother.

Chan said:

“This city has raised me and people like me. This city has raised us well.”

Chan said she will fight for affordable housing as one of her primary issues. She said although she was fortunate enough to purchase a home in the Richmond District with her partner, she recognizes The City is increasingly unaffordable for especially immigrant and working class families.

Chan said:

“This campaign, our campaign, were going to take on the fight to preserve, plan, built 100 percent affordable housing.”

Chan gained experience and insight in her legislative aide work for former Supervisor Sophie Maxwell and Supervisor Aaron Peskin. She also held positions at the Department of Recreation and Parks and at City College of San Francisco as a spokesperson.

The candidate currently works in the office of Assemblyman Kevin Mullin.

Maxwell, who came out to support Chan Friday, said:

“Connie has the energy, the commitment, the leadership and the values that is very much needed right now in San Francisco and in the Richmond.”

As of Friday, no other candidate had filed to run in District 1.
