Needy families will gather Thursday to take part in a holiday toy giveaway sponsored by Bay Area government, non-profit and school workers.
Service Employees International Union Local 1021, which represents more than 54,000 workers in Northern California, is hosting the 4 p.m. event for pre-registered families at the union’s office at 100 Oak St. in Oakland.
SEIU member Sandra Lewis, who works for the city of Berkeley, said:
“As workers at public agencies, local nonprofits, schools — we see the great need in our communities.”
“We wanted to step up our efforts this year and collect hundreds more toys to bring some joy and cheer this holiday season.”
The event will benefit hundreds of children and feature appearances by Santa Claus and elves, according to union officials.
Toys will be given away to families who have been pre-selected by the union’s local nonprofit partners, including Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, YMCA Head Start, Urban Peace Movement, La Clinica de La Raza and Native American Center.
