A police pursuit began early Sunday, September 15, 2019 when it is alleged Eric Van Gelder of Geyserville, Calif. failed to stop, drove past a closed road break, nearly hit a California Highway Patrol officer and led them on a chase exceeding 100 mph. A long standoff took place after a spike strip disabled Van Gelder's vehicle. A SWAT team later removed him from the car using "non-lethal methods."
A major vehicle collision has closed state Highway 1 in both direction at Pomponio State Beach, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in an advisory.
The California Highway Patrol indicates the collision involves a motorcycle and a blue Lexus, and that the rider is responsive.
As of 2:53 p.m., the CHP reports both directions are still closed to traffic. There is no estimated time of when Highway 1 will reopen and motorists are advised to use state Highway 84 to southbound Stage Road to Pescadero Creek Road.
