The San Francisco Police Department, parks department, housing authority and mayor teamed up on a 2019 holiday toy drive that will supply gifts for thousands of children.
Police are hoping to put smiles of the faces of thousands of San Francisco children during this holiday season with their annual Toy Giveaway, kicking off on Friday.
For the toy drive, the police department has partnered with the city’s Housing Authority, the Recreation and Park Department and the Mayor’s Office, among other agencies.
Mayor London Breed said in a statement:
“Every person in San Francisco should experience the joy of receiving a gift during the holiday season.”
She said:
“Thanks to the generous contributions from residents, private partners, community organizations, thousands of kids will be able to unwrap a new toy this year.”
The toy drive is set to kick off Friday with a holiday party for children 12 years old and under. The party starts at 4 p.m. at the Potrero Hill Recreation Center at 801 Arkansas St.
Anyone wishing to make a donation can do at the 70 participating Walgreen stores in the city that are serving as drop-off centers. Donations are being accepted through Dec. 20.
In addition to donations from the public, Another World Entertainment and the Golden State Warriors have also helped organize donations for the toy drive.
Officers will begin distributing the toys to low-income families throughout the city between Wednesday and Christmas Eve.
Police Chief William Scott said:
“The men and women of SFPD are incredibly proud and excited to know that we are helping to make the holidays happier for San Francisco families.”
He said:
“Through the generosity of San Franciscans and our collaboration with city and community partners, we’re able to put smiles on the faces of many children this holiday season.”
