San Francisco city and airport officials honored the late Mayor Ed Lee Wednesday with the dedication of the San Francisco International Airport departures hall in his name.
Airport commissioners in June approved the naming in appreciation for Lee’s work as a civil servant. Mayor London Breed joined Lee’s family at Wednesday’s dedication ceremony.
Breed said in a statement:
“Mayor Lee gave so much to this city, and we will be forever grateful for his service. With this dedication of the International Terminal Departures Hall residents and visitors alike will be reminded of Mayor Lee and his commitment to serve the city that he loved.”
Airport officials revealed several design features planned for the dedicated area, including the unveiled wood-panel wall that reads “Mayor Edwin M. Lee International Terminal Departures Hall.”
A bas-relief plaque of the late mayor will be installed by the end of next year, which will include a video link so passengers can further explore Lee’s life. A photo of Lee will occupy that space until the plaque is complete.
Airport Director Ivan Ivar Satero said in a statement:
“SFO is proud to dedicate the Mayor Edwin M. Lee International Departures Hall so that Mayor Lee’s life and legacy will be remembered by those who pass underneath the lettering that bears his name.”
Lee served as San Francisco’s first Asian American mayor from 2011 to 2017. He died suddenly while still in office Dec. 12, 2017.
