Oakland officials on Friday celebrated the newest city-funded public artwork — two 45-foot-wide roadway arches along MacArthur Boulevard.
Vice Mayor Larry Reid and City Councilmember Loren Taylor were on hand for the dedication for the MacArthur Boulevard Gateway Arches.
The Oakland arch is located near Durant Avenue and will greet motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians as they travel into Oakland from the south. The Eastmont arch is located near 73rd Avenue and welcomes visitors and residents traveling into deep East Oakland.
The arches were commissioned by the city’s Public Art Program and were hand-painted and crafted by East Bay artist Eric Powell.
Funding for the arches comes from the city’s Public Art Ordinance that allocates 1.5 percent of the city’s Capital Improvement Projects to public art.
