Former public defender Chesa Boudin has officially won the contentious race against Interim District Attorney Suzy Loftus and will become the The City’s next elected district attorney.
Loftus conceded late Saturday afternoon after the Department of the Elections released the latest Nov. 5 election results.
The interim DA wrote in a tweet:
“I am so grateful for the chance to run and serve as District Attorney. It has been an honor to campaign with all of you and to lead the office that I care deeply about. We ran a great race, stayed positive and envisioned a city that is more safe and less divided.”
Loftus added:
“I didn’t win the race – but we won the support of so many San Franciscans who are demanding that our city work more effectively together to build safety. Congratulations to Chesa Boudin. I will work to ensure a smooth and immediate transition.”
Boudin leads Loftus by more than 8,000 general votes and by more than 2,400 votes after accounting for ranked-choice calculations.
Early Tuesday election results had Boudin ahead by less than 2,000 votes, but later ranked-choice adjustments and ballot counts repositioned Loftus at the top until Friday, when she slipped behind by 156 votes. Boudin’s dominance grew over the past 24 hours as additional ballots were counted.
Although approximately 1,200 ballots remain uncounted, Boudin is safely within range to claim victory.
Boudin tweeted out:
“San Francisco, We did it.”
