Mother allegedly confesses to drowning 2-year-old girl

A 2-year-old Gilroy girl was drowned in a bathtub by her mother Sunday morning, according to police.

Marcie Montelongo, 35, called 911 around 11:30 a.m. and told a dispatcher what she had allegedly done. Responding officers immediately went to her home in the 7900 block of Westwood Drive and found the girl in a tub full of water.

Police described the child’s body as “lifeless” on arrival.

Firefighters also responded to the scene and attempted to save the girl’s life. She was transported to St. Louise Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Montelongo was located in the vicinity of Miller Avenue and First Street. The woman allegedly confessed again to the Gilroy officer who found her. She was booked into the county jail.

The death is currently under investigation by the Gilroy Police Department as well as the Santa Clara County district attorney and the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Investigators are withholding the victim’s name from the public until the appropriate family members can be notified privately.
