Driver arrested after allegedly striking girls, fleeing on foot

Two juvenile girls were injured Thursday night after a parked car was rammed by an alleged hit-and-run driver near Sonoma, the California Highway Patrol said.

Agustin Mendoza, of Burney, was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe north on Riverside Drive at Cherry Avenue around 7 p.m. when he struck a parked car, CHP Officer Marc Renspurger said.

The force of the crash pushed the parked car into two girls, ages 10 and 16, of Boyes Hot Springs. A CHP officer found Mendoza who fled on foot and he was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run, Renspurger said.

Mendoza suffered minor injuries and he was taken to Sonoma Valley Hospital. The girls were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The 10-year-old girl suffered major injuries and the 16-year-old girl suffered minor injuries, the CHP said.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash that is still under investigation. Renspurger said he does not know if the girls were trick or treating at the time of the crash.
