Two in custody on suspicion of cellmate murder

Two men were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of the killing of an inmate they shared a Santa Cruz County Main Jail cell with earlier this month, county sheriff’s officials said.

Mario Lozano, 33, of Santa Cruz, and Jason Cortez, 25, of Watsonville, are accused of the murder of 24-year-old German Carrillo, who was found dead in his cell around 11 a.m. on Oct. 14.

Investigators determined that Carrillo was strangled in the cell, which is in a housing unit designated for active gang members.

Carrillo, a Watsonville resident, had been in custody since April 2013 on charges connected to a homicide that were filed when he was 17.

Lozano had been in custody since August 2018 on murder charges, while Cortez was in the jail since this January on felony weapons charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
