Warming centers, shelters open as temperatures drop

Santa Clara County on Monday opened warming centers and overnight shelters due to inclement weather throughout the county as temperatures are expected to drop close to freezing this week.

More than 30 centers and shelters will be open through Wednesday, according to the county.

According to the National Weather Service, the Santa Clara Valley could drop to temperatures as low as the mid 30s Wednesday.

The county opens the warming centers when temperatures persistently drop below 38 degrees, or in other instances when there is rain combined with cold temperatures or persistent rainfall.

The Bill Wilson Center, with 250 beds at 693 S. Second St. in San Jose, remains open 24 hours a day during inclement weather. Capacity and hours of operation differ at other centers.
