Thirty-foot tree falls, injures nine at Martinez farmers’ market

Nine people were injured when forceful winds knocked over a tree Sunday morning at the farmers’ market in Martinez.

Six of the injured were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

People were at the market and street fair when the 30-foot-tall tree toppled at the plaza on Main Street at 10:15 a.m.

The youngest injured was a child just under 2 years old, who suffered minor injuries, while the oldest was 73.

Martinez police Sgt. Steve Gaul said:

“It was extremely windy down there.”

The market, street fair and a “Trunk or Treat” Halloween event that had been scheduled to start at 10 a.m. were all canceled.
