American Fire burns 526 acres, crews reach 80 percent containment

A vegetation fire that started Sunday afternoon and has burned more than 500 acres east of American Canyon was 80 percent contained as of Monday morning, according to Cal Fire.

The American Fire, first reported at 3:19 p.m. west of Interstate Highway 80 in Napa County, had been 30 percent contained late Sunday night but crews made “significant progress” overnight in extinguishing the blaze, Cal Fire officials said.

The fire has burned 526 acres, as well as one outbuilding and several wooden fences behind a residential neighborhood in southeast American Canyon. It initially prompted “advisory evacuations” in that area, but those were lifted around 7:15 p.m., according to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

American Canyon Road had been closed between Via Firenze and the Highway 80 interchange, but it reopened by 8 p.m., according to Cal Fire. No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
