Update: Suspicious device rendered safe, Hwy 4 lanes reopened

Update: California Highway Patrol announced that a device that “resembled something similar to a pipebomb was rendered safe” by the Walnut Creek police explosives unit and that all lanes of traffic are open as of 2:30 p.m.


As of 1:15 p.m. Sunday, westbound traffic on Highway 4 from Contra Loma/L Street to Loveridge Road in Antioch has been closed to through traffic due to a suspicious abandoned vehicle that may contain an explosive device, according to California Highway Patrol – Contra Costa officials.

Traffic is being routed off the highway as the Walnut Creek Police Department Explosive Ordinance Unit responds to assist the investigation.
