Pittsburg City Council considers $50,000 immigration resource program

The Pittsburg City Council will consider establishing a new program promoting education, community resources and events related to immigration at their regularly scheduled meeting Monday evening.

The Digital Office for New Americans would exist to promote immigration resources available on the city’s website and in public buildings, coordinate events related to immigration issues and partner with service providers that can help with immigration law and civil rights, as well as housing and employment resources.

It would be funded by a $50,000 allocation from the Pittsburg Power Company. The program would be staffed part time, primarily by a Los Medanos College intern who would perform day-to-day operations under supervision by the city’s director of community services and the senior administrative analyst.

That intern would earn $13.50 to $18 an hour. The primary job responsibilities for the position would include putting resources on the city’s website, looking for relevant events that are not city-sponsored and then going to those events to set up an information table, assisting the city’s staff with city-sponsored immigration events and marketing the program, among other tasks.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Monday in the council chambers at 65 Civic Ave. in Pittsburg.
