The Patrick Mahomes show rolled on Sunday afternoon, as the Kansas City Chiefs torched the Oakland Raiders 28-10 at the Coliseum.
After a forgettable first quarter, the NFL MVP threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns in the second quarter alone as Mahomes absolutely picked apart Oakland’s secondary.
As effective and devastating as they were Mahomes thought they could do better as an offense:
“It was the same game plan and we called the same plays. We hit a lot of them in the second quarter…we had a great quarter but as an offense it was too much sloppiness I guess you could say. We weren’t being as efficient as we usually are.”
Derek Carr looked sharp to open up the game as he went 6-for-12 for 71 yards in the first quarter. He found Oakland top receiver Tyrell Williams for a four-yard touchdown in the back of the endzone.
Oakland was up 10-0 at the end of the first quarter, but they were unable to get much done after.
Mahomes had four possessions in the second quarter, and all went for touchdowns on beautifully-thrown deep balls.
Rookie Raider receiver Hunter Renfrow said he could not help himself but admire Mahome’s performance:
“He’s unbelievable. He did a good job, he had some time to sit back there and it’s fun to watch. It’s not fun if you’re playing him, but as a offensive fan, it’s fun to watch.”
Oakland had multiple chances to take Mahomes off the field. Oakland had Kansas City pinned deep in their territory, but the second-year starter went the length of the field.
Kansas City was able to convert on three 3-and-longs situations in the second quarter which all led to touchdown passes, including a 42-yard dime to Mecole Hardman on 3rd and 20 over the Raiders safety Lamarcus Joyner. Joyner said:
“He’s a hell of a quarterback. I’m not going to take anything away from him. He’s arguably the number one quarterback in this league…you have to cover a little more going against a guy like him.”
Before the end of the first half, Mahomes threw a 39-yard touchdown to tight end Travis Kelce. Oakland’s defensive backs were near invisible as there were no one near Kansas City’s receivers on their touchdown passes.
At last, for Oakland, it was halftime.
At the start of the third quarter it was more of the same. Mahomes came out and threw a laser to Demarcus Robinson for 28 yards.
On Oakland’s first possession of the second half, the Raiders looked determined to come back and marched down the field on their opening drive behind a Josh Jacobs 51-yard run up the right side. The drive fizzled when Carr threw a pick at the Chiefs four-yard line to cornerback Bashaud Breenland.
Carr now with 19,176 passing yards passed Ken Stabler (19,078) for Oakland’s all-time passing leader, but it was not enough as they could not keep up with Kansas City’s offense. Carr said:
“I wish it was under better circumstances. I wish we could have won…because I know how much it meant to him, how much it meant to his family…I’d said that I’d do it with respect and that’s what I’m doing, even in a loss. I’m thankful, especially to do it with the Raiders because I love this place.”
As dominant as a player that he is, Mahomes’ stats could have been even better, as Kansas City ran the ball most of the second half to run out the clock.
This is Mahomes’ game and everyone else is just living in it. For the Raiders, they still have not won back-to-back against divisional opponents since 2002.
Carr’s play was a hard fall from his Week 1 performance against the Denver Broncos. He threw one touchdown and two interceptions along with 178 passing yards.
For Mahomes, it was just another day at the office. The MVP finished with a ridiculous 443 yards with four touchdowns.
After falling to 1-1 on the season, Oakland travels to Minnesota next Sunday. Oakland’s next five games are on the road, including a road game in London against the host Chicago Bears. These road games could make or break Oakland’s season.
Joyner says the team is ready for the next six weeks.
“We’ve prepared for it. We’ve been training for that mindset since OTA. We’re a good football team.”
