A 24-year-old Santa Clara man died and two other people suffered major injuries in a two-car crash in unincorporated Santa Cruz County on Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported at 2:29 p.m. on state Highway 1 north of the Scott Creek Bridge.
The Santa Clara man was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse south on the highway when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the northbound lane, striking a 1974 Pontiac Firebird, CHP officials said.
The Mitsubishi driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The two people in the Pontiac, a 52-year-old man and 51-year-old woman from Santa Cruz, suffered major injuries, according to the CHP.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
