Police identify driver in red light crash that killed one pedestrian, injured another

San Francisco police released the identity of the driver involved in a crash Sunday afternoon in the Tenderloin neighborhood as 21-year-old Vallejo resident Kelsey Mariah Cambridge.

Police arrested Cambridge on one count of vehicular manslaughter and one count of running a red light.

Cambridge was allegedly driving northbound on Taylor Street and ran a red light at the intersection of Taylor and O’Farrell streets. Cambridge, who was driving a rented Tesla, was then struck by a Mini Cooper, causing both drivers to lose control of their vehicles.

Police said Cambridge struck two pedestrians. One pedestrian identified as Benjamin Dean of Clovis, 39, died from the crash. His wife was also struck and remains in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Neither driver was injured and both remained at the scene. Police said it does not appear alcohol and/or drugs played a factor in the crash.

Walk San Francisco advocates are calling on city officials to declare a state of emergency for traffic safety and will gather at City Hall Tuesday morning to demand action.
