Police are investigating a possible hate crime in which a racial slur allegedly prompted a fight involving up to five people on Saturday in San Francisco.
The incident began around 5 p.m. near Leavenworth Street and Golden Gate Avenue, police said.
A man allegedly yelled a racial slur at the victim, a 33-year-old man, and in response the victim pulled out a box cutter.
The victim, however, dropped his weapon when he saw that the suspect was accompanied by three accomplices. At least two of them were armed, one carrying a mallet and another a baton, police said. The four suspects hit and punched the victim repeatedly. One of the suspects then picked up the box cutter and the suspects fled, according to police.
The victim suffered a scraped elbow and shoulder and complained of a headache. He was taken to a hospital for his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening, police said.
Police described the suspects as two men in their 20s and two others of unknown ages.
