Missing Oakland scientist found dead in Greece

A scientist from Oakland was reportedly found dead Monday evening in Greece, the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Germany announced.

Suzanne Eaton, a 59-year-old molecular biologist, went missing on July 2 while at a conference at the Orthodox Academy on the Greek island of Crete.

The scientist’s family and friends raised $40,844 with a Facebook fundraiser to aid search efforts and donate to organizations that volunteer time and resources for the search.

Greek authorities recovered her body Monday evening. They have not completed their investigation regarding the events that may have occurred on July 2.

In a statement, the German institute wrote:

“Suzanne was an outstanding and inspiring scientist, a loving spouse and mother, an athlete as well as a truly wonderful person beloved to us all.”
