Man reportedly tries to shoot group, gun malfunctions

A 20-year-old Seaside man was arrested after allegedly trying to shoot at a group of people in Monterey on Saturday night, according to the Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team.

Gustavo Chavez is in custody after officers had responded at 8:43 p.m. to multiple reports of a fight involving 15 to 20 people in the area of Figueroa Street and Del Monte Avenue, according to the regional task force. One witness reported seeing someone with a gun and officers arrived to learn that someone had pointed the gun at several people and pulled the trigger, but it apparently malfunctioned and the magazine fell from the firearm to the ground, authorities said.

The victims then tackled the suspect, but a second suspect intervened with a knife and threatened them, allowing the suspects to flee. Officers eventually found the suspect allegedly armed with a gun in the area of Del Monte Avenue and Camino El Estero. A foot chase ensued and the suspect, later identified as Chavez, was taken into custody. He has been booked into jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, resisting arrest and a parole violation.

The suspect with the knife remains at large and a detailed description of him was not immediately available.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the regional task force at (831) 646-6926.
