Livermore expected to pass flavored tobacco sales ban

The Livermore City Council is set to approve an ordinance requiring that local retail tobacco sellers be licensed and imposing a ban on selling flavored tobacco products in the city.

The sale of electronic smoking devices (e-cigs) and the related fluids would also be banned under the new ordinance, which was discussed at length during a hearing at the council’s June 24 meeting.

The ordinance’s “second reading” is on Monday’s council agenda as an item on the consent calendar, meaning it won’t be discussed again unless the council specifically acts to do that.

Though a number of Bay Area cities have enacted such flavored tobacco bans, Livermore will become the first city in the Tri-Valley to ban the sale of flavored tobacco. If approved, the law is slated to go into effect 30 days after adoption.

Monday’s meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in council chambers at 3575 Pacific Ave. in Livermore.
