A sailboat that struck a piling attached to an Amtrak train trestle in the Carquinez Strait Friday morning delayed train schedules but did no permanent damage to the structure, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. At about 10:30 a.m., the Coast Guard received a report that a 17-foot boat had struck the trestle between Martinez and Benicia, just west of the Benicia Bridge, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jordan Akiyama.
Akiyama said:
“The boat didn’t make contact with the trestle, it hit a piling before the trestle.”
Akiyama said:
”The boat’s skipper was able to maneuver the vessel away from the piling and out of danger and no injuries were reported.”
The trestle was closed to traffic while engineers inspected it for damage and the Amtrak Capitol Corridor train 535 was delayed by more than an hour, while train 528 was delayed for just under an hour, according to Amtrak spokeswoman Olivia Irvin.
