Supreme Court kicks census citizenship question back to Commerce Department

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday sent a dispute about the citizenship question on the 2020 Census back to the Commerce Department for further explanation of its decision to include the question. The court said that the rationale of needing the information for enforcement of the Voting Rights Act “seems to have been contrived.”
