Vallejo City Manager Greg Nyhoff said Tuesday he has selected retired Fairfield police Chief Joseph Allio as Vallejo’s interim chief until the city finds a new permanent chief.
Nyhoff said he will recommend Allio as interim chief to the Vallejo City Council on June 25. Vallejo police Chief Andrew Bidou is retiring June 30.
Allio retired as Fairfield’s chief in 2017 after serving 33 years in law enforcement. He began his career with the San Francisco Police Department in 1984 and joined the Fairfield Police Department in 1987.
In a news release, Allio said:
“I respect the responsibility that Greg, the Council and my fellow officers have placed on me with the appointment.”
He said:
“Serving communities and making life better for residents fills me with enthusiasm, and I pledge to serve Vallejo openly and be an active listener. I intend to make a positive impact for our officers and the community of Vallejo before I pass the baton to my replacement in a few months.”
Nyhoff said Allio has a strong reputation of focusing on expanding community outreach, building strong police-community relations and fostering double-digit reduction in major crimes.
