Authorities identify victim killed by suspected DUI driver after high-speed chase

A 43-year-old man killed by a suspected DUI driver early Monday morning has been identified as Juan Salido, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Alexander Zumini, 28 of San Jose, was arrested early Monday morning for allegedly being under the influence of methamphetamine during a short vehicle pursuit that ended in the fatal crash.

The California Highway Patrol tried to pull over the BMW 325i at about 3:20 a.m. after seeing Zumini weaving and speeding on southbound U.S. Highway 280 north of U.S. Highway 101.

Zumini then took a transition ramp from Highway 280 to southbound Highway 101, and officers attempted the enforcement stop on the highway north of Tully Road.

CHP Officer Ross Lee said Zumini slowed down and began to yield in the right shoulder, but then turned off all his lights and accelerated away from officers at speeds of over 100 mph. Lee said officers didn’t have a chance to get out of their vehicle before the car fled the scene. The pursuit continued for about 2 miles before the BMW took the Yerba Buena Road off-ramp at a high speed, then ran a red light into an intersection. The BMW crashed into a minivan traveling east on Yerba Buena Road, and the minivan came to a rest under Highway 101.

The crash caused major damage to both cars and Salido was killed despite life-saving attempts by first responders, according to the CHP. His passenger suffered major injuries, and is currently in critical but stable condition.

The BMW continued through the Yerba Buena intersection onto the southbound Highway 101 ramp before coming to a stop after the crash. Zumini then exited the car and tried to run away from officers before being taken into custody, according to the CHP.

Zumini is facing charges of felony DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter, evading police causing injury, hit-and-run, possession for sale of methamphetamine and a parole violation.

His passenger, 27-year-old Melissa Dawn Vincent, is suspected of possessing stolen property and identity theft.

Zumini and Vincent were hospitalized after the crash, and then booked into Santa Clara County Jail upon their release. Zumini is being held without bail and Vincent has a bail of $45,000. Both are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday at noon.
