Alameda County Library will join other regional libraries in eliminating overdue fines to encourage people to check out materials, according to the library.
In a news release, county librarian Cindy Chadwick said:
“Eliminating overdue fines will strengthen our communities by restoring library access to tens of thousands of people, including those who need our services the most.”
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted May 7 to approve the library’s proposal to get rid of daily fines and all past overdue fines on materials. The change will go into effect July 1.
According to the library, studies have shown that library fines create barriers to library access and are not effective in encouraging library members to return borrowed items on time.
Alameda County Library joins San Mateo County Library, Contra Costa County Library, Berkeley Public Library, Oakland Public Library and others in recently going fine-free.
