Crews find plane wreckage, pilot in slough near Antioch

Emergency crews using sonar and remotely operated vehicles to search the Delta waters of Broad Slough, near Antioch, found the wreckage of a small aircraft Monday morning, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.

A boater notified authorities about the plane crash around 5 p.m. Sunday. Responding agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, found debris and a backpack — but the location of the plane itself and any possible victims could not immediately be determined.

Investigators say the plane took off from Buchanan Field Airport in Concord around 5 p.m.

The pilot is believed to be the only person on board at the time of the crash, but deputies said late Monday afternoon he has not yet been identified.

They did not indicate whether he survived or a body has been recovered.
