A 21-year-old man killed in an early Saturday morning crash on U.S. Highway 101 in San Jose has been identified as Orlando Sanchez of Castro Valley, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office. Officers responded to a crash at southbound Highway 101 and Hellyer Avenue at 3:15 a.m. Sanchez was found in the front passenger seat of a 2003 Toyota Corolla with major injuries, and later died at the scene. His family members created a GoFundMe donation page at
https://www.gofundme.com/orlando-sanchez on Saturday and have raised more than $7,000 of their $10,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon.
“Orlando was a young man who could never be missed in a crowd,” the page says, describing him as a compassionate friend to many who wanted to become a youth pastor.
“His persona, charisma, and personality made him stand out from the rest.”
The driver, 20-year-old Christopher Carrillo of San Jose, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was driving on the highway north of Hellyer when the car veered to the right and left the roadway, traveled up a shoulder embankment and struck an over-crossing, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Carrillo suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital. He will be booked into Santa Clara County Jail upon his release.
