Thousands of cans rolled onto all lanes of Interstate Highway 880 Tuesday morning, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman. The CHP received a report of a spill on northbound Highway 880 from Whipple Road to Tennyson Road around 9:30 a.m., CHP Officer Joseph Fowler said
Fowler attributed the spillage to some type of truck heading for a recycling center.
Initially, the cans covered all lanes of the highway but they drifted into the center lane and accumulated along the edges, according to Fowler.
Fowler said citations were being issued to drivers who stopped to pick up the crushed cans.
CHP and Cal-Trans are working together to clear thousands of crushed cans on I-880 N/B from Whipple Rd. to Tennyson Rd. Please do not stop to pick up the cans. You could end up leaving with a ticket and no cans 🤷🏻♂️ #CrushedCans #EmergencyStopOnly #Recycle pic.twitter.com/MXYE1sbc6D
