Construction crew shovel causes San Rafael gas leak

A gas leak on Ida Street in San Rafael late Monday morning happened when a third-party construction crew struck a half-inch service line with a shovel to one PG&E customer’s property, a spokeswoman for PG&E said Monday afternoon.

Fourth Street already was closed because of construction in the area when the gas leak happened, PG&E spokeswoman Megan McFarland said. PG&E was informed of the leak at 11:41 a.m. and shut off the gas around 12:10 p.m., McFarland said.

San Rafael police advised residents to avoid the area, and reopened Fourth Street between G and H streets around noon.
