Victims swiped right, got robbed in Tinder dating scam

Police in San Jose have arrested five teens in connection with a series of recent armed robberies and carjackings.

Bryan Gonzalez, 19, Jonathan Jimenez, 18, Lesly Portillo, 18, Yadira Villarreal, 19, and a 15-year-old male juvenile, all of San Jose, were arrested on suspicion of several crimes including robbery, carjacking, auto theft and hit-and run, according to the San Jose Police Department. Police said the suspects used a fraudulent Tinder account posing as women looking to communicate with male victims.

Tinder is a mobile location-based social search app used as a dating site. The crimes occurred between March 16 and March 29. Using the profile names Becky or Victoria, the suspects would set a location and date, usually late at night and near parks.

When the victims arrived, they were beaten, robbed and carjacked by several masked suspects, police said.

The suspects were arrested at different dates and times.
