Body of Pacifica swimmer found near Fort Funston

The body of a Merced County man who disappeared March 26 while swimming off of a Pacifica beach with friends was found Friday near Fort Funston in San Francisco, a Pacifica police sergeant said Saturday.

The body of 28-year-old Tyler Collins was found about 5:40 p.m. Friday by a dog walker on the beach near Fort Funston, Pacifica police Sgt. Dominic Albanese said. The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office identified Collins.

Collins and some friends were staying at a Pacifica motel when, early in the morning on March 26, they went swimming at Rockaway Beach, about nine miles south of where Collins’ body was found Friday.

The swimmers encountered undertow and tried to leave the water, but Collins never made it out, police said. The U.S. Coast Guard led a 15-hour search for Collins that day, but didn’t find him.
