Rescuers have called off a search for a boogie boarder who went missing off the coast of San Mateo County Thursday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said.
The rescue was called off at about 6:45 p.m. for the 18-year-old man who was last seen off Poplar Beach in Half Moon Bay.
The man’s friends last saw him about 15 yards off shore and he appeared to be unresponsive and face down in the water, sheriff’s spokeswoman Detective Rosemerry Blankswade said.
The search began at about 3 p.m.
Blankswade said deputies are taking a missing persons’ report. If they get other evidence of the man’s whereabouts, a search may begin again, Blankswade said.
Rescuers faced challenges such as high surf and low visibility from dense fog.
Blankswade said there is always rip current prevalent along the county coast and dangerous surf conditions may have played a part in the man going missing.
