A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a machete attack in unincorporated Redwood City on Monday evening, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at about 6:45 p.m. to the 300 block of Fourth Avenue on a report of a disturbance and blood found in the lobby of an apartment complex.
Investigators learned San Mateo resident Marco Antonio Ayapanjocop approached two people while armed with a machete and then threatened them as he swung it multiple times in their direction, sheriff’s officials said. Neither victim was struck by the machete as Ayapanjocop swung it, but one suffered a minor injury to his arm when he reached for the machete to try to take it from him, according to the sheriff’s office.
A 7-year-old child was with the victims during the attack but was uninjured.
Ayapanjocop fled but was later located and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and child cruelty, sheriff’s officials said. The sheriff’s office did not disclose a possible motive for the attack.
