A 30-year-old man has been arrested after he had a “Make America Great Again” hat swatted off his head by another man and allegedly responded by attacking him with a sword in San Francisco’s Fillmore District last weekend, police said Thursday.
San Francisco resident Leor Bergland was arrested Wednesday night for the slashing with a sword that occurred at about 9:50 p.m. last Friday in the area of Fillmore and Oak streets, according to police.
A 27-year-old Berkeley man had been walking in the area and saw someone walking toward him wearing the MAGA hat made famous by Donald Trump during his campaign that eventually led to his election as president in 2016. After the Berkeley resident swatted the hat, the man later identified as Bergland pulled out a sword and slashed the victim’s left hand, causing a severe cut, police said.
The man and a witness initially chased the sword-wielding suspect until he turned around and began advancing toward them. The pair then ended their pursuit and the suspect fled.
Police did not say how they identified the suspect as Bergland, but eventually found him inside a restaurant in the area of Eddy and Larkin streets shortly after 9:15 p.m. Wednesday and took him into custody without further incident.
Bergland was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder, mayhem, aggravated assault, carrying a concealed dagger, and brandishing a weapon, according to police.
