Elderly woman killed in crash with teen drivers identified

The victim of a fatal car crash in unincorporated San Mateo County earlier this month has been identified as Inez Barranti, 86, of Millbrae, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

The crash occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on March 13 off of Interstate Highway 280 near Crystal Springs Golf Course. A white 2016 Volkswagen, driven by a 16-year-old girl and carrying a 15-year-old female passenger, was turning from the northbound highway off-ramp onto Golf Course Drive.

The Volkswagen struck a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe that had been traveling east, causing it to roll over and come to a rest on its left side.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 63-year-old man, and his passengers, Barranti and an 89-year-old man, were taken to Stanford Hospital. Barranti died at the hospital, while the driver was treated for moderate injuries. The 89-year-old passenger had a complaint of pain but was otherwise uninjured.

Anyone with more information about the case is being asked to call California Highway Patrol Officer William Torr at (650) 369-6261.
