Suspect in Mission shooting arrested near Arizona border after shootout

A male suspect involved in a shooting in San Francisco’s Mission District Monday afternoon drove to Southern California, where California Highway Patrol officers allegedly got into a shootout with him before arresting him early Tuesday morning, police said.

The name of the suspect has not been released and it was not immediately clear if he was wounded in the Southern California shooting with CHP officers.

Police had been looking for him after he allegedly shot a 19-year-old man at about 3:50 p.m. in the 200 block of 13th Street. Responding officers located the victim inside the lobby of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation building at 1727 Mission St., police said.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

No CDCR staff members were injured in the shooting, police said. Investigators were able to identify the suspect and that information and information about his vehicle — a silver Ford Focus – were disseminated to authorities.

Later that night, investigators learned the car’s license plate number had registered on an Automated License Plate Reader in Southern California.

Upon learning from San Francisco officers that the suspect was in Southern California, CHP officers near Blythe, a city in Riverside County, located his vehicle abandoned near the Arizona border, according to police. A short time later, CHP officers located the suspect and a shootout occurred, ending with the suspect’s arrest.

No CHP officers were injured in the shooting, police said. The circumstances of the officer-involved shooting are being investigated by the CHP and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. San Francisco investigators are expected to travel to Southern California to continue investigating Monday’s shooting, police said. It was not immediately clear when the suspect would be booked into a San Francisco jail.
