An Oakland police motorcycle officer was injured on Tuesday morning when a motorist struck the officer when the officer tried to stop the motorist for failing to stop at a stop sign, police said.
The officer was taken to a hospital after the incident in the 2400 block of Havenscourt Boulevard at 11:09 a.m. on Tuesday and is listed in stable condition, according to police.
The officer, who was dressed in a full police uniform and was riding a fully-marked police motorcycle, saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed that failed to stop at a posted stop sign, police said. The officer activated the motorcycle’s emergency lights and siren and conducted a traffic enforcement stop, according to police.
The officer dismounted from the motorcycle, approached the vehicle and contacted the driver but the driver quickly reversed his vehicle and struck the officer, police said.
The vehicle continued backwards, struck the officer’s motorcycle, pushed it 15 feet and then fled the scene at a high rate of speed, according to police.
The officer advised dispatchers of the incident and provided a description of the driver and vehicle, police said.
