Body found at Fort Funston near landslide that killed climber last month

Authorities located a woman’s body Monday morning on the beach at San Francisco’s Fort Funston, according to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The woman’s body was found on the beach and about a quarter-mile south of Sloat Boulevard. Her identity and her cause of death have not been released, GGNRA officials said.

On Feb. 22, a landslide at Fort Funston claimed the life of a woman, but it was not immediately clear if the woman found Monday morning is the same person.

In that case, the victim was climbing up an 80-foot cliff with a dog and another woman. When they were halfway up, witnesses said the cliff started caving in on top of them, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

Bystanders were able to rescue one of the women and the dog, and tried to frantically dig for the other woman but were unsuccessful. She has been tentatively identified by her friends and family as Kyra Sunshine Scarlet, according to a GoFundMe account. That account can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/kyra-sunshine-scarlet and had raised nearly $10,000 as of Monday morning.

In the weeks after the landslide, search crews used heavy machinery, shovels and search dogs to try to find Scarlet’s body, but stormy weather conditions hampered their efforts.
