Antioch suspect flees, hides on roof before surrendering

A man suspected of possessing a stolen vehicle who allegedly fled from police was found hiding on the roof of a nearby business in Antioch Monday morning, according to police.

Around 8:45 a.m. an officer spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen at an apartment complex in the vicinity of Cavallo Road and East 18th Street.

A suspect inside the vehicle, later identified as 34-year-old Dupree Straughter from Antioch, fled as the officer approached and was last seen entering a nearby business.

Police said they were unable to locate Straughter inside, however, and they eventually found him on top of the building.

Officers had allegedly seen something that looked like it might be a weapon in his hand, so they evacuated the business and secured the scene. Straughter surrendered peacefully shortly afterward, climbing off the roof so he could be taken into custody.

A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded handgun, police said. Straughter was arrested on an outstanding warrant as well as on suspicion of additional felonies related to the loaded gun and his attempt to flee from police.
