CHP officer sustains major injuries in Hwy 101 collision

A California Highway Patrol officer was taken to a hospital with major injuries Monday morning after he was involved in a collision on U.S. Highway 101 in San Mateo, according to a CHP spokesman.

At about 10:20 a.m., the motorcycle officer was involved in a collision with a gray 2018 Volkswagen Golf on southbound Highway 101 south of Third Avenue, according to CHP spokesman Officer Kurt Waldschmitt. The officer’s injuries are considered major but not life-threatening, Waldschmitt said.

The Volkswagen’s driver, who was the only occupant of the car, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The two right lanes of the highway remained closed as of noontime and there is no estimate on when they might reopen, Waldschmitt said.
