Anti-nuke rally planned at Japanese consulate on Fukushima anniversary

A rally will be held Monday afternoon at the Japanese consulate in San Francisco to mark the eighth anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear plant failures and to speak out against the restarting of that country’s nuclear plants.

On March 11, 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Okuma, Japan, shut down after a major earthquake. However, an ensuing tsunami disabled the emergency generators that powered cooling pumps, resulting in meltdowns and hydrogen-air explosions that caused the release of radioactive material from three nuclear reactors over the following four days. It was the most significant nuclear accident since the Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union in April 1986.

The rally will begin at 3 p.m. at the Japanese consulate at 275 Battery St. in San Francisco. The event is sponsored by the No Nukes Action Committee.
