Firecracker mistaken for explosion rattles area near Powell Street BART

Police are investigating the apparent detonation of a firecracker near the intersection of Fifth and Market streets in San Francisco near the Powell Street BART station, police said Saturday night.

What was initially reported as an explosion was called in to police at 6:53 p.m. Saturday, police said. There were no injuries or property damage, police said.

BART briefly closed one entrance to the Powell Street Station, said BART spokesman Chris Filippi, but the station was not evacuated.
