Striking Oakland teachers to vote Sunday on tentative agreement

Teachers in Oakland will vote Sunday on a tentative agreement that would end their seven-day strike.

The ratification vote, on a proposed 11 percent salary hike over four years with a one-time 3 percent bonus, is set for noon Sunday at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Oakland.

The Oakland Unified School District and the Oakland Education Association, which represents 3,000 teachers, nurses, counselors and other staff, announced the agreement on Friday afternoon.

“This is a historic no-concessions contract with a win in every major proposal we made,” the union posted Friday on Twitter. “We are now leaps and bounds closer to the schools that Oakland students deserve.” The district said in a statement that the agreement “is a big win for our teachers, students and community.”

In addition to the salary increase, the agreement calls for a reduction in class sizes.

The teachers’ strike began Feb. 21 after two years of failed negotiations between the union and the school district.

The teachers’ union sought a 12 percent pay raise over three years and the district initially offered a 5 percent raise over three years but gradually increased its offer the last two weeks.
