Larry Baer, wife caught on video arguing, tumbling to the ground

A witness who helped break up a loud, public dispute between San Francisco Giants Larry Baer and his wife Pam told SFBay that he and other bystanders were concerned for her safety during the confrontation late Friday morning.

Larry Baer was captured on video in a Hayes Valley plaza arguing with his wife Pam in an altercation that grew loud and physical.

UPDATE 3:48 p.m. This story has been updated from the original with additional witness description and reaction from the Baer family.

The incident occurred outside the Juice Shop at at 432 Octavia Street around 11:45 a.m. Friday.

Taylor Askins, an employee at the Juice Shop, told SFBay she witnessed the conflict as she was clocking in for her shift Friday. Askins said she could hear the argument before it became physical:

“We heard screaming and stuff and she was on the ground and he was crouched over her and they were fighting over a cell phone.”

Another employee at a store in the same Hayes Valley plaza who asked not to be named told SFBay that when he first noticed the argument, it seemed like a pretty normal disagreement between partners:

“They were in a bit of a marital dispute and arguing over a long period of time, [but] it got a little out of hand and aggressive. It looked like she had his phone and he wanted it back, to say the least, and so he got it back, but way too aggressively.”

The employee said as soon as he realized the argument had become physical, he and others ran to the aid of Pam Baer:

“We physically broke it up. A gentleman pushed him off of her, I kind of yelled at them to get away from each other because they kept gravitating towards each other.”

He said he witnessed at least one person capturing video of the two fighting. Video of the incident was first published by entertainment and celebrity website TMZ.

The video shows Baer reaching to grab a cell phone from his wife’s right hand before pulling his wife and the chair she was sitting in as she fell to the ground, screaming “Oh my God!”

According NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Alex Pavlovic, the Baer family released the following statement:

“Regrettably today we had a heated argument in public over a family matter. We are deeply embarrassed by the situation and have resolved the issue.”

SFBay has contacted the Giants for comment and has not yet received a response.

A tweet from SFBay sportswriter Julie Parker in connection with this story mischaracterized the confrontation depicted on the video published by TMZ. This story has been updated to more accurately describe the incident.
