One million safe miles of driving earns honors for eight postal workers

Eight U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are being honored Thursday morning in Oakland for driving a million miles without an accident, postal officials said.

The eight carriers work at the Civic Center Post Office in Oakland and will be honored at 8 a.m. at the post office at 201 13th St. The eight carriers are also being inducted into the National Safety Council “Million Mile Club.”

The eight are Mel Banagan, Gregory Ellington, Humphrey Gee, Sullivan Smothers, Charles McDaniels Jr., Richard Davis, Margaret Patrick and Jeffrey Shipp.

Postal officials said the eight drove their million accident-free miles all within the city limits.
